MARINA Honors crew of M/V Hamburg Bridge

The officers and crew of MV Hamburg Bridge were among those honored by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) during the Recognition Night held last September 28 at the PICC Forum highlighting the week-long celebration of Maritime Week 2017. The Award was for an exemplary deed of helping to rescue more than 300 refugees while displaying bravery and adhering to protocols at the same time.

The award was actually a triple feat for the same award was also give to the vessel’s manning agency Ventis Maritime Corporaration and Principal “K” Line Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

The Awards were presented by MARINA Administrator C/E Marcial Quirico Amaro himself to five members of the crew who thanked the industry for recognizing their effort. The 5ve present during the awarding were 1AE Silvano C, Padillo; O/S Patrick John B. Alilam, O/S Cyrelle Rowne E. Casana, 2/CK Vincent C. Calubad, and E/Cdt Albrence A. Seballos. C/E Amaro commended the crew for their bravery and heroism in extending help without a second though yet able to follow through with all protocols expected of them without losing their cool and handling the entire situation with ease in dealing with a few tense moments onboard with the refugees.

The vessel’s routine voyage last April 2016 turned into a daring rescue mission when they received an order to assist in helping out some perceived refugees adrift in the waters of the Mediterranean seas. The container vessel was supposed to deliver goods from France to Egypt on that fateful day.

According to the vessel master, Captain Augusto Buenaventura, MV Hamburg immediately sets its course towards the distressed position to locate the adrift boat. They received instruction to assist the refugees and towards this end, the vessel went on to locate it and rescue the beleaguered refuges consisting of men women and children.

By the next day, they began rescue operation and was able to assist more than three hundred of these refugees to board the vessels where they were given food and medical attention. The delay in embarking these refugees to their intended destination which was Italy also gave rise to a few incidents of growing discontent and stress to the refugees who demanded they should be allowed to get off the vessel.

The officers and crew fortunately were able to diffuse the tension and navigated to Taranto Port of Italy where the refugees were allowed to disembark.
