The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology is delighted to announce that QinetiQ and DE&S are once again the principal sponsors of its biennial European International Submarine Races (eISR), hosted at QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin (one of the world’s largest indoor water tanks) in Gosport, UK on 2-13 July 2018. Babcock International Group are also supporting eISR 2018 as the Gold Sponsor of the races.

The races are a unique sporting and engineering challenge where teams from universities across the world design, build and race their human-powered submarines around a demanding underwater slalom course. They will be piloted and pedalled by a scuba diver and will aim to improve their times continuously over the course of the week, as they make vital adjustments to their submarines – sometimes rebuilding them completely - in a demonstration of a strong engineering acumen and the ability to assess problems and take rapid action.

“We are delighted to be able to support the human-powered submarine races for 2018. In previous years we have seen fantastic innovation from all involved and we look forward to meeting this year’s teams. We are proud to support the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers who are so important to the future of the maritime sector.” Dr Jon Bayliss, QinetiQ.

“Babcock is delighted to sponsor the European International Submarine Races again in 2018. This event is technically demanding and requires committed team working; precisely the skills we wish to encourage in young engineers. We are looking forward to seeing the latest innovations in the design of human powered submarines and some hugely entertaining, competitive racing. We wish all the entrants well!” Dr Jon Hall, Managing Director, Technology, Babcock International Group.

Any organisation wishing to support the development of budding marine professionals, and to

highlight the exciting role that STEM subjects play in our lives, can sponsor eISR 2018 by emailing samantha.carter@imarest.org.
